Betye Saar: Ready to be a Warrior
The Betye Saar Documentary chronicles 94-year-old artist Betye Saar from 2014 through 2021, a period of time when Saar received unprecedented recognition in the contemporary art world after creating art for nearly six decades. The movie captures footage of Saar receiving honors around the country starting in 2014 with the Edward MacDowell Medal of the Arts Award Ceremony at the MacDowell colony in New Hampshire until the 2019 LACMA Art and Film Gala. Our film has also documented her simultaneous solo museum exhibition openings at the Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Betye Saar Documentary Project will also include exclusive interviews with contemporary artists, gallerists, curators, family members, friends, and people in her inner circle. In addition to documenting this historical moment in time for Betye Saar, a pioneering black female artist, the film reflects on Saar’s extensive body of work. Since the late 1960s, her work has explored themes of racial, gender, and social justice which speak to the Ford Foundation’s mission. Saar’s assemblage work has dealt with the spiritual, familial, and political history of African-Americans, specifically with the history of slavery. The film discusses and creates dialogue around pieces such as The Liberation of Aunt Jemima (1974). In this legendary assemblage work, Saar reframed the mammy figurine, previously sold as a derogatory object for the white gaze, by placing a rifle in her hand, transforming her into a warrior figure. Much of Saar’s work explores the representation of the black female body, as well as black masculinity in America. Current events involving police brutality, hate crimes, and mass incarceration continue to drive her to the studio, where she feels she can express her rage in her work. One of Saar’s truisms is, “I’m an ordinary woman who does extraordinary things,” and this film aims to reflect on the woman behind this amazing body of work, a woman who in addition to building a successful art career, raised three daughters who are also creatives. We believe that one can gain power not only from their political and artistic work, but also from the leadership they show in their personal life. The film follows Saar as she sifts through discarded everyday objects to use in her work, and explores her artistic process in detail. It also reflects on her time as a single mother who also pursued an art career, and the ways in which she balanced both elements of her life. 77 m.
